Nissan launches new models of PK and PW Series Trucks

This month, as per a Press Release from Nissan UD Trucks, Japan, UD Trucks have launched  all new models of Condor PK Series (9 Ton class) and Condor PW Series (12 Ton class)  as a part of full model change of their medium duty trucks.  The new Condor PK and PW models have a new cab design which is more akin to the cab design of Nissan UD’s heavy duty truck series ‘Quon‘.  So the new medium duty truck series PK and PW will have the same comfort level, crash safety performance, and superb aerodynamic performance of the Heavy duty truck Quon,  along with the nimble maneuverability of medium duty trucks.

The new Condor PK and PW series share the same brake parts and axle parts with the heavy duty truck Quon series- thus ensuring added safety and comfort for the driver.  These new Condor models are powered by GH7 engine that comes with a newly designed common rail system with maximum fuel injection pressure.  The new Condor series trucks are fitted with Urea SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system and UDPC (UD Particulate Cleaning) system to reduce NOx (Nitrogen Oxide) and PM (Particulate Matter) for emission control.  With these advanced technologies, the new PK and PW Condor series complies fully with Japan’s 2009 emission control regulations.

The new Nissan Condor PK and PW models come with a multifunction display for monitoring the operational status of the truck via the Internet.  These trucks are also fitted with the “Fuel Economy King” system as a standard which prompts the driver on how to drive for improved fuel efficiency.  These features in the new Condor model lead to improved safety, higher fuel efficiency and  improved operations.

The new Condor PK 9 Ton class model is priced at about 9,600,000 Yen and the PW 12 ton class model is priced at around 11,693,000 yen.  These models changes by Nissan UD show their commitment to bring improved safety, comfort and fuel economy to all the models in their lineup.  Combining medium-duty truck economy with heavy-duty truck cab comfort in these new models would certainly improve the sales of Nissan Condor Medium duty trucks.

New Nissan UD 8 Ton Condor PK Trucks

Nissan UD Trucks Corporation (previously known as Nissan Diesel Motor Co. Ltd.) has introduced a new model of heavy duty truck to its Condor series trucks – the 8 ton Condor PK.  The new Condor truck  model has an 8-ton load capacity and is JP09 compliant.  JP09 is currently the world’s stringent emission standard introduced in 2009 by Japan’s New Long Term Emission Regulation.  The JP09 stresses on reduction of nitrogen oxide and particulate matter of 65 percent and 64 percent respectively in comparison with the former regulation – JP05.

The Nissan Condor PK has undergone a complete model change.  The cab design is new and has shades of the Quon heavy-duty truck from the same family in both looks and features of an 8-ton vehicle.  This truck is powered by the new GH7 engine that has been specially developed to provide the best in environmental performance and in fuel economy.  This latest Condor from UD Trucks is leading the world in its unique system of Urea Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) – a new edition of low-pollution device.

Both the Volvo Group and UD Trucks have striven to harness their collective synergy into the manufacturing of a medium-duty truck.  On the basis of Volvo Group’s technology called CAST (Common Architecture Shared Technology), the entire process of development is to harmonize with the other companies of the Volvo Group.  Hailed as the “global truck”, it is expected to be on display in the showrooms in Japan by mid-2010 and in the US at the year-end 2010.  The Ageo Plant of UD Trucks will produce both – the domestic and the export models.

In a line of commercial vehicles of medium duty, the new 7 Ton and 9 Ton Class trucks from the Condor PK series are the obvious choices of Japanese truck customers, mainly because these trucks are ranked high in terms of comfort, reliability and economy and have a very low fuel consumption.

Nissan Diesel becomes UD Trucks

The Volvo Group is renaming its Japanese truck subsidiary from Nissan Diesel Trucks Co. to Nissan UD Trucks Corporation.  Along with the name change the Volvo Group is also planning to change its logo to include the newly corporate name “UD trucks” in it.  This new logo will be effectively used for selling all trucks at home ground as well as abroad.  This new name is applicable from 1st February 2010.

nissan ud logoThe new move is being planned by the Volvo Group to strengthen its brand in this ever demanding market situation.

Nihon Diesel Industries Ltd established in early 1935 has already changed its name 3 times.  First the name changed to Nissan Motor Co. and in then in 2006 again name was changed to Nissan Diesel when Nissan sold its shares to become part of AB Volvo which is a Swedish based company.   Even then truck maker used to sell trucks with the name UD as a product brand. Earlier UD used to stand for “Ultraflow Diesel” and in recent times it stands for “Ultimate Dependability.”  “UD” has always been used as a trade mark by Japanese truck maker mainly to highlight the quality of their diesel engine.

In Japan, Nissan diesel is one of the top selling brands in terms of fuel efficiency. Nissan could achieve this target mainly because of the Japanese Government’s tax free discount provided to all the fuel efficient trucks. Nissan Diesel’s range of fuel-efficient trucks and Government subsidiaries has helped to increase market share of Nissan. Due to which the Japanese OEM, Nissan currently occupies about 1/4th of Japan’s heavy truck market and also large part of China’s heavy truck market through its joint-venture with China based company known as Dongfeng Motor Corp. Through this joint venture Nissan is trying to occupy the Chinese market for sales of heavy trucks.

As Nissan Diesel occupies a very strong position in Japan and also in other parts of Asia, the Volvo Group predicts and expects substantial growth potential.  Volvo can greatly benefit from Nissan Diesel’s experience of Medium duty trucks and Heavy duty trucks for which it is known for. Another technology which can be added advantage for Volvo is Nissan’s hybrid technology which is quiet well – know.

By renaming and incorporating its techniques, the Volvo Group is taking a step forward for strengthening its business relationship with Nissan.
